Rendering is commonly applied to the external elevations of all types of buildings to provide protection and decorative finishes. In more recent times renders have been made from sand : cement : water although lime can be used to substitute the cement. Admixtures can also be introduced to improve workability and weather resistance.

Finishes can be smooth, textured or contain aggregates to produce ashlar, dashed or tyrolean surfaces commonly found in the UK.

As a result of concerns over heat loss and the carbon footprint of buildings, insulated render systems offer many solutions to architects, engineers and local authorities who need to meet the demands of the building regulations
and concerns over global warming.
